Monthly Manufacturing Performance September 2013

25 October 2013

Highlights

  • On a year-on-year basis, Singapore’s manufacturing output grew 9.3% in September 2013. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output increased 11.3%.
  • On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, manufacturing output rose 3.7% in September 2013. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output grew 5.8%.

(I)         Total Manufacturing Performance

  • On a year-on-year basis, manufacturing output grew 9.3% in September 2013. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output increased 11.3%. On a three-month moving average basis, manufacturing output rose 5.5% in September 2013, compared to a year ago. On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, manufacturing output rose 3.7% in September 2013. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output grew 5.8%.

(II)        Performance by cluster

  • Output of the electronics cluster grew 20.0% in September 2013, compared to the same period a year ago. Growth was driven by the computer peripherals (75.6%), other electronic modules & components (22.1%) and semiconductors (19.3%) segments, on the back of improved export demand. Cumulatively, output of the electronics cluster expanded 0.4% from January to September this year, compared to the same period last year.
  • Output of the transport engineering cluster increased 14.4% year-on-year in September 2013. The marine & offshore engineering segment led growth with a 17.7% increase in output, supported by higher contributions from the rig building and ship building industries. The aerospace segment expanded 16.4% with higher demand for aircraft repair jobs from the US and the Asia Pacific region. Output of the transport engineering cluster in the first nine months of 2013 rose 2.1%, compared to the same period last year.
  • The chemicals cluster’s output rose 5.8% year-on-year in September 2013, with all segments recording output growth. Supported by strong regional demand, the other chemicals and specialties segments rose 11.1% and 6.5%, respectively. The petroleum segment expanded 7.0%, partly attributed to the low base last year when some plants shut down for maintenance. Output of the chemicals cluster in the first nine months of 2013 rose 0.4% on a year-on-year basis.
  • The general manufacturing cluster’s output increased 2.0% in September 2013, compared to a year ago. The miscellaneous industries segment grew 7.5%, on account of higher output in metal tanks & containers, as well as construction supplies such as concrete & cement products, and metal doors, windows, grilles & gratings. On the other hand, the food, beverages & tobacco and printing segments declined 2.3% and 4.6%, respectively. On a year-to-date basis, output of the general manufacturing cluster rose 2.2%.
  • Output of the biomedical manufacturing cluster grew 0.1% in September 2013 on a year-on-year basis. Pharmaceuticals output increased 0.8%, but this was partly offset by the 3.2% decline in the medical technology segment. On a year-to-date basis, output of the biomedical manufacturing cluster increased 2.6%, compared to the same period a year ago.
  • Output of the precision engineering cluster fell 0.8% year-on-year in September 2013. The precision modules & components segment grew 6.0%, supported by higher output in industrial & mechanical rubber goods, and dies, moulds, jigs & fixtures. In contrast, the machinery & systems segment declined 6.1% on account of weak demand for semiconductor related equipment and mechanical engineering work. Cumulatively, output of the precision engineering cluster shrank 8.3% year-on-year in the first nine months of this year.
  • The next monthly manufacturing performance media release will be issued on 26 November 2013
