Monthly Manufacturing Performance June 2014

25 July 2014

Highlights

  • On a year-on-year basis, Singapore’s manufacturing output grew 0.4% in June 2014. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output increased 0.1%.
  • On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, manufacturing output contracted 0.1% in June 2014. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output declined 0.2%.

(I)         Total Manufacturing Performance

  • On a year-on-year basis, manufacturing output increased 0.4% in June 2014. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output increased 0.1%. On a three-month moving average basis, manufacturing output rose 1.5% in June 2014, compared to a year ago. On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, manufacturing output contracted 0.1% in June 2014. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output declined 0.2%.

(II)        Performance by cluster

  • The chemicals cluster’s output rose 10.5% on a year-on-year basis in June 2014. The petrochemicals segment recorded the highest gain, with output expanding 23.2%. This was partly attributed to the low base in June last year when some plants were shut down for maintenance. The specialties and other chemicals segments expanded 9.6% and 5.3%, respectively, on account of higher regional demand. On the other hand, the petroleum segment contracted 7.0% on the back of weak refining margins. Output of the chemicals cluster in the first six months of 2014 increased 8.5%, compared to the same period in 2013.
  • Output of the precision engineering cluster grew 4.8% year-on-year in June 2014, with both segments recording higher output. The precision modules & components segment grew 5.2% due to higher production of metal precision components and fabricated metal products. The machinery & systems segment rose 4.6%, supported by higher demand for mechanical engineering work and lifts & escalators. Cumulatively, output of the precision engineering cluster increased 3.7% for the first six months of this year, compared to the same period last year.
  • The biomedical manufacturing cluster’s output increased 1.6% in June 2014, compared to the same period a year ago. The medical technology segment grew 11.0%, supported by healthy export demand for medical instruments and consumables. In contrast, the pharmaceuticals segment declined slightly by 0.3%. On a year-to-date basis, output of the biomedical manufacturing cluster increased 9.5%, compared to the same period a year ago.
  • The general manufacturing industries cluster’s output grew 0.8% in June 2014 on a year-on-year basis. The miscellaneous industries segment grew 4.2% on account of higher output of batteries, jewellery and metal doors, windows, grilles & gratings. This was partly offset by the 8.5% decline in printing output. On a year-to-date basis, output of the general manufacturing industries cluster increased 0.6% compared to the same period a year ago.
  • Output of the transport engineering cluster fell 0.4% year-on-year in June 2014. The marine & offshore engineering segment grew 9.3% on the back of higher contributions from rig building projects, but the aerospace segment declined 12.1% due to lower volume of repair jobs from commercial airlines. Output of the transport engineering cluster in the first six months of 2014 increased 8.3%, compared to the same period last year.
  • Output of the electronics cluster fell 4.8% year-on-year in June 2014. The other electronics modules & components and infocomms & consumer electronics segments posted gains of 17.1% and 1.5%, respectively, but this was outweighed by declines in other segments. Cumulatively, output of the electronics cluster expanded 2.3% from January to June this year, compared to the same period last year.
  • The next monthly manufacturing performance media release will be issued on 26 August 2014.
