Monthly Manufacturing Performance November 2012

Date: 26 December 2012

Highlights

  • On a year-on-year basis, Singapore’s manufacturing output grew 3.1% in November 2012. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output grew 0.9%.
  • On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, manufacturing output grew 1.9% in November 2012. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output increased 0.6%.

I     Total Manufacturing Performance

  • On a year-on-year basis, manufacturing output grew 3.1% in November 2012.  Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output grew 0.9%.  On a three-month moving average basis, manufacturing output contracted 2.1% in November 2012, compared to a year ago.  On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, manufacturing output grew 1.9% in November 2012 compared to October 2012.  Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output increased 0.6%.

II     Performance by cluster

  • Output of the biomedical manufacturing cluster expanded 12.9% in November 2012 compared to the same period a year ago, with both the pharmaceuticals and medical technology segments recording higher output.   The pharmaceuticals segment posted a gain of 13.2%, due to a higher value-added mix of active pharmaceutical ingredients being produced.  Robust export demand for medical devices contributed to the 11.9% growth in the medical technology segment.  On a year-to-date basis, output of the biomedical manufacturing cluster expanded 8.9%, compared to the same period a year ago.
  • The chemicals cluster’s output rose 5.2% on a year-on-year basis in November 2012, supported by higher output across all segments.  The specialty chemicals segment expanded 10.8%, attributed to higher regional demand for food chemicals and fuel additives.  The petrochemicals and petroleum segments registered output growth of 2.9% and 0.2%, respectively.  Output of the chemicals cluster in the first eleven months of 2012 declined 0.8%, compared to the same period in 2011.
  • Output of the transport engineering cluster grew 4.0% year-on-year in November 2012, supported by higher growth in the marine & offshore engineering (5.6%) and aerospace (2.7%) segments.  Higher production of oilfield equipment components, together with the completion and delivery of some marine vessels contributed to the output growth in the marine & offshore engineering segment.  Output of the transport engineering cluster in the first eleven months of 2012 grew 11.4%, compared to the same period last year.
  • The general manufacturing cluster’s output increased 1.0% in November 2012 on a year-on-year basis.  Higher output in the miscellaneous industries (8.7%) more than offset the declines in the food, beverages & tobacco (-3.2%) and printing (-8.3%) segments.  Output growth in the miscellaneous industries segment was supported by higher production of batteries, steel structural components and pipe fittings.  On a year-to-date basis, output of the general manufacturing cluster grew 2.4%, compared to the same period a year ago.
  • Output of the precision engineering cluster was 0.2% lower year-on-year in November 2012.  The precision modules & components segment grew 1.8%, on account of higher output of optical instruments & photographic equipment, and electronic connectors.  In contrast, the machinery & systems segment contracted 2.3% on the back of weak export demand for semiconductor related equipment.  Cumulatively, output of the precision engineering cluster grew 2.0% from January to November this year, compared to the same period last year.
  • The electronics cluster’s output fell 2.3% in November 2012 compared to the same period a year ago.  The data storage segment surged 82.0%, mainly due to the low base last year, when floods in Thailand caused a disruption in the supply chain for data storage products.   The semiconductors segment remained weak, with output falling 11.0%.  Output of the electronics cluster in the first eleven months of 2012 declined 11.1%, compared to the same period in 2011.
  • The next monthly manufacturing performance media release will be issued on 25 January 2013.
