Reflections
"Talk about a steep ramp-up!"
I still remember my first week in EDB. I had to sit in Strategic Review Session of the Gaming Industry with my Managing Director to learn more about a major project that my Division was presenting on.
Whilst it was invigorating as a young officer to be sitting in such a high powered meeting where senior management debated about strategies to drive the future of Singapore's economy, one thing struck me.
I noticed that all the presentations at this Corporate Management Forum were made by young officers. These were high level, strategic recommendations which I thought would only be conceptualised and proposed by someone of an extremely senior position. Not only did that officer present his thoughts and recommendations in a confident and persuasive manner, he was able to field all the tough questions that the panel of senior management were firing at him.
I later found out that in EDB, it is normal for all presentations and recommendations to be done by young officers. I soon realised that EDB puts all new officers through intensive on-the-job training to get the necessarily domain knowledge and skills to front business meetings and negotiations.
My "Buddy" also played a key role in training me up. He was a fellow officer in my Division, and actively immersed me in EDB's culture. He also introduced me to the EDB community and made sure that I was invited to lunches every day. More importantly, he took time to show me how to analyse industries and companies and develop strategies to pre-position Singapore for the future. He also brought me into his meetings to let me observe how business meetings were conducted and coached me on how to give presentations and write reports.
It was indeed a steep but exhilarating ramp up for me. It is not uncommon for senior business executives to be surprised at how young but credible EDB officers are. I know that it is though a lot of hard work and determination invested by each officer. And this would not have been possible without all the support and systems that have been put in place. |
