Singapore's Transport Engineering achievements include:
- 70% global market share of the conversion of Floating Production Storage Offloading (FPSO)
- 70% world market share in jack-up rigs
- 20% world market share for ship repair
- Asia's #1 MRO hub
- 6 automotive regional distribution centres (RDCs) - largest RDCs in Southeast Asia
- 15 automotive regional headquarters (RHQs) - largest RHQs in Southeast Asia
- Among the top 3 global centres for oil & gas (O&G) equipment manufacturing and servicing
- #1 in Asia by production volumes for 6 of the top 10 O&G equipment players
Singapore's transport engineering sector comprises the aerospace, marine and offshore engineering, and land transport industries. In the aerospace industry, companies like Honeywell Aerospace, Matsushita Avionics Systems and Boeing have started high-level design and engineering activities here. The success of Asian Aerospace 2004, Asia's largest air show, underscores Singapore's strength as a global aviation hub. In land transport, automotive companies like DaimlerChrysler, Yamaha, Volvo and Delphi have picked Singapore for a range of business activities - including headquarters, distribution, test-bedding, R&D and manufacturing.
To ensure the continued availability of skilled manpower to support the transport engineering industries, Singapore has initiated new education, recruitment and R&D programmes, including establishing the Centre for Offshore Research & Engineering (CORE) to encourage research collaborations with industry in the area of oil & gas and offshore engineering technologies.
A four-year undergraduate programme in aerospace engineering and an undergraduate final-year specialisation in marine and offshore engineering have been launched at local Nanyang Technological University, along with the Career Transition Scheme to facilitate the recruitment of existing Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) technicians into the aerospace industry.
In addition, Singapore's highly reputable mechanical engineering capabilities have been, and continue to be, vital to the development of the transport engineering industry in ensuring high value-added manufacturing, and headquarters and distribution activities.
