Singapore Honours Contributions of Seven International Investors |

2004 Award recipients confident of Singapore's role as key international manufacturing and logistics hub
- President S.R Nathan conferred the Honorary Citizen Award as well as the Public Service Star (Distinguished Friends of Singapore) and Public Service Medal (Friends of Singapore - Business) on seven international recipients at a ceremony at the Istana. The three awards recognize and honour the significant personal contributions these recipients have made to Singapore's economy mainly in the areas of business, industry, technology & science.
- The 2004 award recipients are:
Honorary Citizen Award -Lodewijk (Lo) Christiaan van Wachem - Former President, Royal Dutch/Shell; Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Royal Philips Electronics; Chairman of the Board, Global Crossing Ltd; and Chairman of the Board, Zurich Financial Services and Zurich Insurance Company.
[NB: Sir Richard B Sykes - Rector of Imperial College London was also conferred the Honorary Citizen Award this year. He received his award from President Nathan at an earlier ceremony on 12 October 2004].
The Honorary Citizen (HC) Award was inaugurated last year and is the highest recognition given to non-Singaporeans who have rendered extensive and valuable service to Singapore and its people, or have made significant impact in the areas of business, science, technology, infocomms, arts and culture, health, sports, tourism security.
Public Service Star (Distinguished Friends of Singapore) -Mr Lee R. Raymond - Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Exxon Mobil Corporation -Mr Carel Juliaan van den Driest - Chairman of Royal Vopak and Singapore Honorary Consul in the Netherlands
The Distinguished Friends (DFS) and Friends of Singapore (FOS) awards were first developed by EDB to recognize the contributions of international investors in economic development. The DFS is one of the Singapore government-s highest recognitions to international heads of organizations for their outstanding contributions. These recipients promoted Singapore's economic interests as well as championed projects and investments in Singapore.
Public Service Medal (Friends of Singapore - Business) -Mr Tarun Das - Chief Mentor, Confederation of Indian Industry -Professor Paul Herrling - Head of Corporate Research Novartis International AG and Chairman of the Board of the Novartis Institute of Tropical Disease Pte Ltd -Mr Isao Uchida - President & Chief Executive Officer of Yokogawa Electric Corporation -Mr Reiner Williams - President of Shell Nederland B.V. in the Netherlands
The Friends of Singapore (Business) award recognizes business executives and managers of influence who have worked closely with various government agencies at an operational level to grow Singapore's economy beyond the company context.
- Mr Teo Ming Kian, Chairman of the Singapore Economic Development Board said, 'My heartfelt congratulations and appreciation to the award recipients. We owe much of our success today to their personal commitment and contributions towards our economic development. With their drive and friendship, they have helped made Singapore a compelling global hub for business and investment.'
- All seven recipients are leaders in their respective fields and have helped Singapore build its capabilities and international reputation in various industries in the manufacturing and related sectors. The recipients have either been actively involved in the development of Singapore's industry or instrumental in the development of their companies' businesses in Singapore. Each has also, in their advisory and personal capacities, contributed significantly to Singapore's economic growth.
