Monthly Manufacturing Performance - November 2005 |
|
| |
November manufacturing output higher than same month a year ago
(I) Total Manufacturing Performance
1. Manufacturing output continued its upward trend in November 2005. Compared to November a year ago, total output rose by 22.4% with the biomedical manufacturing and transport engineering clusters spearheading the growth. Excluding the biomedical manufacturing cluster, manufacturing output increased by 17.1%. The three-month moving average growth for November was 20.6% for total manufacturing. The seasonally adjusted month-on-month manufacturing output growth was up 1.5%. Cumulative total manufacturing output for the first 11 months of 2005 increased by 9.9% compared to the same period in 2004.
(II) Performance by cluster
2. Output of the biomedical manufacturing cluster rose by 49.3% in November. The growth came mainly from the pharmaceuticals segment. Production of active pharmaceutical ingredients increased by 57.2% to meet deliveries to the US and Europe. In the medical technology segment, output grew by 5.1% with lower output of some medical devices. Cumulatively, output of the cluster increased by 16.9% in the first 11 months of 2005 over the same period last year.
3. The transport engineering cluster maintained a high output level in November. The marine & offshore engineering segment grew by more than 50.0%. Shipbuilding and ship repairing were active as shipyards worked towards the completion of some ships scheduled for delivery early next year. The fabricators of oil rigs progressed further in their rig construction with existing orders in hand. The aerospace segment also grew by 25.9% as there was greater demand for repairs of commercial aircraft and aircraft engines from the US and the regional market. Cumulatively, output of the transport engineering cluster increased by 26.5% for the first 11-month period of 2005 over the same period last year.
4. The electronics cluster grew by 19.9% year-on-year in November. There was strong growth in the semiconductors, computer peripherals and data storage segments. The production of semiconductors increased by 42.0%, sustained by stronger demand this November compared to November last year. The computer peripherals segment grew by 24.4% with manufacturers increasing their production of printers and related products. The production of hard disk drives increased, leading to the 10.4% growth in the data storage segment. In contrast to these segments, the infocomms & consumer electronics segment contracted by 4.2% despite higher production of personal computers and consumer electronics. The contraction came from lower output of mobile products. Cumulative growth for the electronics cluster was 7.5% in the first 11 months of this year compared to the same period last year.
5. Output of the precision engineering cluster rose by 16.0% year-on-year in November. The machinery & systems segment achieved a high growth of 30.8%. Higher demand stimulated increased production of industrial process control machinery, semiconductor assembly & testing equipment, conveying machinery, lifting & hoisting machinery, transformers and generators. The precision modules and components segment also grew by 9.0%. In tandem with growth in the electronics cluster, higher demand sustained production of metal and plastic precision components. Output also increased for die castings, screws, springs, cables, wire harness and connectors. Cumulative output in the first 11 months of this year grew by 5.2% compared to the same period in 2004.
6. The chemicals cluster grew by just 1.5% in November this year over last November. Good processing margins continued to boost the petroleum segment’s growth of 2.1%. All the refineries were operating at very high capacities in November this year. The petrochemicals and specialties chemicals segments grew by 3.6% and 3.1% respectively. Cumulatively, the chemicals cluster grew by 2.8% in the first 11 months of 2005 compared to the same period in 2004.
7. Output of the general manufacturing industries increased by 3.6% in November. The increase came from higher output by the food, beverages & tobacco industries. Production by the printing industries this November was about the same as November last year. For the first 11 months of this year, output of this cluster of industries increased by 2.2% compared to the same period of 2004.
