Singapore honours five Captains of Industry for their exceptional contributions |

1. President S R Nathan has conferred the Public Service Star and Public Service Medal on five business leaders who have contributed significantly to the economic growth of Singapore, mainly in the areas of business, industry, science and technology.
2. The Public Service Star was instituted in 1963 to honour any person who has rendered valuable public service to the people of Singapore and has distinguished himself in the field of arts and letters, sports, the sciences, business, the professions and the labour movement. Through their efforts and voluntary service, these individuals have helped develop Singapore into a dynamic and vibrant business environment.
3. The 2005 award recipients are:
Bintang Bakti Masyarakat (Public Service Star)
- Mr Paul Chan Kwai Wah - Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Asia Pacific and Japan, Hewlett-Packard Asia Pacific Pte Ltd
- Mr Lee Tzu Yang - Chairman, Shell Companies in Singapore [NB: Mr Chan and Mr Lee received their awards from President S R Nathan at the Investiture Ceremony on 11 November 2005].
4. The Distinguished Friends of Singapore (DFS) and Friends of Singapore (FOS) - Business awards were initiated by the Economic Development Board (EDB) to recognise the contributions of international investors in economic development.
5. The DFS is one of the Singapore Government's highest recognitions to international business persons for their outstanding contributions to Singapore's economy over a sustained period. These recipients have played a major role in strengthening Singapore's technological capabilities and standing in the international business arena.
6. The 2005 award recipients are:
Public Service Star (Distinguished Friends of Singapore)
- Dr h.c. Daniel Vasella, M.D. - Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Novartis AG
- Mr Klaus Ziegler - Chairman , Supervisory Board, EPCOS AG[NB: Mr Ziegler received his award from President S R Nathan at a ceremony at the Istana today. Dr Vasella is unable to attend today's ceremony, and received his award from the President at the Investiture Ceremony on 11 November 2005.]
7. The FOS award acknowledges business executives and managers of influence who have worked closely with various government agencies to grow Singapore's economy beyond the company context and helped develop new industries in Singapore.
8. The 2005 award recipients are:
Public Service Medal (Friends of Singapore - Business)
- Dr Mark E. Lashier - Project Director, Planning & Strategic Transactions, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LLC [NB: Dr Lashier received his award from President S R Nathan at a ceremony at the Istana today.]
9. Mr Teo Ming Kian, Chairman of the Economic Development Board, said:"My heartiest congratulations to these five business friends of Singapore. We are grateful for their personal commitment and contributions to our economic development. They have played a pivotal role in building up our capabilities and competitiveness in our industries and helped create many opportunities for Singapore and our people."
10. All recipients are leaders in their respective fields and have helped Singapore build its capabilities and international reputation in various industries in the manufacturing and related sectors. The recipients have also been instrumental in the development of their companies' businesses in Singapore. Each has also, in their advisory and personal capacities, contributed significantly to Singapore's economic growth.
