Monthly Manufacturing Performance - June 2008

(I) Total Manufacturing Performance
  1. Manufacturing output in June 2008 rose 2.5% over the same month last year. On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, production in June increased 4.5% from May. Cumulatively, manufacturing output for the first half of 2008 registered a growth of 3.6% over the same period in 2007. The three-month moving average index for June 2008 was 5.2% lower than the same period last year.

(II) Performance by cluster

  1. The transport engineering cluster grew 8.0% in June 2008 compared with the same month last year. All segments of the cluster recorded an expansion. The marine & offshore engineering segment grew 12.6% in June, due to more ship building and repairing activities. The aerospace segment grew 1.8%, and the land transport segment grew 16.1% due to more contractual deliveries in June. Cumulative output of the transport engineering cluster rose 7.4% for the first half of 2008.

  1. The biomedical manufacturing cluster grew 4.0% in June, compared to the same month last year. Output of the pharmaceuticals segment rebounded from the decline in the last two months and rose 5.7% year-on-year in June. The medical technology segment contracted 10.1% due to delay in shipment of certain products to the US. For the first six months of 2008, cumulative output of the biomedical manufacturing cluster was 7.8% higher than the same period last year.

  1. The electronics cluster grew 2.7% year-on-year in June. Growth was registered in the semiconductor (1.2%), computer peripherals (24.2%), data storage (5.4%) and other electronic modules & components (6.5%) segments. The infocomms & consumer electronics segment declined 15.8% in June. Cumulative output of the electronics cluster for the first half of the year grew 2.5% compared to the same period last year.

  1. Output of the chemicals cluster grew by 1.5% in June, compared with the same month last year. Refineries’ throughput rose 2.8%, whilst output of the petrochemicals segment dipped 1.1% with several planned maintenance shutdowns in June. Output of the specialties segment expanded 9.3% with increased exports to ASEAN and other parts of Asia. The other chemicals segment contracted 17.8%. Cumulative output in the first half of 2008 was 1.1% higher than in the same period last year.

  1. The general manufacturing industries grew 0.6% year-on-year in June. The food, beverages and tobacco industries grew 8.9%, while the printing segment contracted by 5.6%. Cumulative output of the general manufacturing industries for the first half of 2008 rose 2.0% compared to the same period in 2007.

  1. The precision engineering cluster shrank 2.8% in June. The machinery & systems segment and the precision modules & components segment shrank 0.4% and 5.0% respectively. Cumulative output in the first half of 2008 was 1.7% lower than in the same period last year.
