Asia's first e-University makes Singapore its global HQ

Universitas 21 Global launches e-MBA programme

After attracting ten world-class universities to set up a presence here, Singapore has made further headway in its drive to develop as a premier education hub. Universitas 21 Global, Asia's first e-University, has made Singapore its global headquarters.

Its decision is a major boost for e-learning, one of the sub-sectors that Singapore is building up as part of its strategy to become a Global Schoolhouse that offers a diverse and distinctive mix of quality education services worldwide.

Universitas 21 Global, which has received pioneer status as well as the International Headquarters (IHQ) Award from EDB, aims to use Singapore as its springboard to the region. Its first online Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme, launched in August, has an intake of 27 students, with more than half from overseas.

Acting Minister for Education, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who presented Universitas 21 Global with the IHQ award, said the online university "adds a new dimension to Singapore's efforts to meet the growing need across Asia for higher education and continual learning."

Noting that the e-learning market in the Asia-Pacific is expected to reach US$400 million by 2005, he said a vibrant e-learning environment would open up opportunities for individuals to meet their aspirations for further education and a better life.

Universitas 21 Global is a partnership between Universitas 21, a network of 16 research-intensive universities including the National University of Singapore, and Thomson Learning, one of the world's largest publishers of educational materials and providers of online information and solutions.

Its aim is to provide an affordable and convenient online solution to students worldwide, particularly those who need to juggle study with career.

Universitas 21 Global CEO, Dr Mukesh Aghi, said: "Within less than a decade, there will be around 100 million people around the world qualified to undertake university study but without access to a campus-based place."

"Universitas 21 Global aims to help fill this gap and address this demand by combining excellence and expertise of traditional on-campus teaching with an innovative and flexible online solution, with the end result being a world-class branded degree," he added.
