Asyst Technologies moves production base to Singapore

US$100 m worth of production in first year of operation

Asyst Technologies, a US-based manufacturer of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, has teamed up with Solectron to manufacture all its production in Singapore.

The move will generate more than US$100 million worth of production in the first year of operation of the facility in Tuas. The 16,000 sq ft, class-10,000 and class-1,000 clean-room, was built and operated by Shinei International, a subsidiary of Solectron.

Dr Steve Schwartz, Chairman and CEO of Asyst Technologies, said: "This is an important step towards our goal of making Asyst a $1 billion company that delights its customers.

"We chose Solectron because of their award-winning commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. And we chose Singapore because it is here that we found an ideal manufacturing partner in Shinei, a stable and supportive government, a highly educated and skilled workforce, and a platform that will allow us to better serve our customers." Mr Chester Lin, Executive Vice President and President, Solectron Asia/Pacific, said the company's long-term commitment to Singapore has grown stronger than ever and that Singapore plays a central role in its strategy for business expansion and success in Asia.

Solectron employs 2,400 people in Singapore and offers access to solutions which support the entire electronics product life-cycle, from design to manufacturing and after-sales services.

On the new partnership, Mr Teo Ming Kian, Chairman EDB, said it brings out the best in each party. By leveraging on Singapore's strengths in manufacturing through Shinei, Asyst can focus more on developing the next generation equipment.

Shinei, on the other hand, can move up the value chain to handle more sophisticated systems-level manufacturing.

Mr Teo said that Singapore is an ideal location for such a partnership because "we have the right environment to facilitate outsourcing." The vote of confidence from Asyst will further strengthen Singapore's semiconductor equipment industry.
