Prof Luther is also a visiting Professor at the National University of Singapore's Materials Science and Engineering Department. He was a member of the International Panel of Experts (IPE) on Sustainability of the Built Environment from Singapore's Building and Construction Authority in 2008, and served on the Steering Committee on Environmental Sustainability for Singapore's Housing and Development Board.
He holds a PhD degree in atomic physics from the University of Hannover, Germany. His awards include the European Becquerel Prize for outstanding merits in photovoltaics and the German Environmental Award 2005. Time Magazine hailed him "Hero of the Environment" in 2008.
