DHL launches its Advanced Regional Centre (ARC)

| Logistics & Supply Chain Management

DHL launched its Advanced Regional Centre (ARC) in Tampines LogisPark on 19th April 2016. Housed within ARC is also the DHL Asia Pacific Innovation Centre, DHL’s first innovation centre outside of Germany and a joint development with EDB. Deputy Prime Minister Mr Tharman was the Guest of Honour for the event.

ARC’s pioneering multi-customer automation system uses 130 robotic shuttles to pick and store products from 72,000 locations across 26 levels, improving picking efficiency by 20% and utilising 40% less space than conventional warehousing operations. This first-of-its-kind system creates a model for the future of warehousing in land-scarce countries and dense cities.

Mr Kelvin Wong, Assistant Managing Director of Singapore Economic Development Board, said, "We are witnessing a pivotal chapter in the transformation of the Singapore logistics industry, as these best-in-class supply chain practices exemplified by DHL's Advanced Regional Centre start to take off in Singapore. DHL's decision to locate their first innovation centre outside of Germany in Singapore is another testimony to Singapore's commitment to promote supply chain innovation.”

Deputy Prime Minister Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam said, “With the advancement in 3D printing technologies, businesses – especially niche and high-tech companies – can add new value through better customisation, and focus on after-sales service. This also presents new opportunities for logistics companies to develop new business and service models such as on-demand and predictive replenishment of spare parts.”
