On 14 Oct 2016, German controls and automation specialist Pepperl+Fuchs opened its new Global Distribution Centre in Singapore. The Jurong warehouse, which costs over S$65 million and spans an area of 17,700 sqm, is the single largest investment in the history of the company.

The Global Distribution Centre features an intelligent warehouse management software system, and an automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) enabled by internet of things capabilities. It is also the world’s first facility where the ASRS is built on top of the pallet warehouse, allowing the company to house both storage systems on a single plot of land.

Centralising Pepperl+Fuchs’ warehouse into Singapore, from which it will distribute more than 15,000 products worldwide, will enable it to increase efficiency and cost-effectiveness while providing customers with shorter delivery times.

Speaking at the centre’s opening ceremony, Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry) S Iswaran said that Pepperl+Fuchs’ investment will serve as an example for Singapore’s manufacturing sector:

“The government will continue investing significantly in advanced manufacturing technologies to better position our companies for the future. We have identified the industrial internet of things as a key capability among the new technology areas. And we certainly hope to see more successful deployments following in the footsteps of your highly automated global distribution centre.”
