Opportunities to tap on Singapore’s open innovation platforms to accelerate growth masthead image

Innovation is integral to business success, for companies to serve customers well through the provision of new and improved products and services and stand out against competitors.

To this end, open innovation enables companies—both large and small— to crowdsource ideas, share knowledge and information about problems with external partners and work with them to create market-ready solutions. By enabling companies to draw on ideas from external sources, the cost to develop new products and services through open innovation is often lower than hiring and acquiring the resources needed to design a suitable solution.

For startups, participation in open innovation opportunities doubles up as a collaboration opportunity with corporates to develop or bring new solutions to market, resulting in a win-win outcome.

Here are three of Singapore’s innovation initiatives you should know about.

#1 Corporate Venture Launchpad (CVL)

WHAT IS IT? A programme where companies can work with an EDB-appointed venture studio to embark on venture sprints and build new businesses quickly and effectively.

WHO IS IT FOR? Established companies, regional family businesses and high growth companies with Singapore-based operations, who seek to:

  •  Keep ahead of disruption through building new ventures with innovative products, services and business models,
  • Join a growing corporate venturing movement, where companies build new ventures that have strong potential to scale from Singapore to become globally competitive businesses.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Companies can choose from a diverse pool of appointed venture studios that bring venture-building experience, methodologies, and multidisciplinary talent to support them in the ideation, incubation and building of a new venture. Participating companies will also receive co-funding support of up to 50% for qualifying costs (not exceeding S$500,000) for each concept validation sprint.

 #2 Global Innovation Alliance

WHAT IS IT? With a strong focus on technology and innovation, the Global Innovation Alliance (GIA) gives your business access to a network of partners in Singapore and major innovation hubs and demand markets overseas. It is an initiative by EDB, Enterprise Singapore (EnterpriseSG), and the Ministry of Education (MOE).

WHO IS IT FOR? International startups looking to scale up in Asia through Singapore.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Tech startups can tap one of two programmes:

  • Co-innovation Programmes: Match Singapore-based companies with overseas partners to collaborate on product R&D projects or solutions with strong market potential.
  • Acceleration Programmes:  These are designed to fast-track companies’ market entry through access to workshops, mentorships and facilitate connections with potential clients and partners.

#3 OPEN INNOVATION NETWORK & OPEN INNOVATION PLATFORM

WHAT IS IT? The Open Innovation Network (OIN) is a national platform, launched by EnterpriseSG and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) of Singapore, which aggregates all new and existing open innovation challenges currently in effect. OIN also provides startups and corporates easy access to participate in these challenges or initiate new ones. This includes challenges launched on the Open Innovation Platform (OIP).

WHO IS IT FOR? Corporates with a pressing problem statement and startups who have innovative solutions or know-how to design solutions. Corporates can also tap the OIP to work with IMDA and experienced industry consultants to diagnose business challenges before launching Innovation Calls on the OIP every quarter.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Corporates can launch their innovation challenge through OIN, to invite participants from Singapore and beyond to contribute their solutions to your problem statement. Innovators, startups or enterprises can search the relevant OIN directories for existing challenges to join or seek co-development and test-bedding opportunities with local and global companies.
