From Oxford’s lecture halls to Stanford’s Silicon Valley and eventually the frontlines of Singapore’s healthcare sector — Economic Development Board (EDB) Scholar Clarissa Lim’s journey proves that the most interesting careers rarely follow the script.
At the Economic Development Board (EDB), there is no single road to success. For scholar Tan Heng Jie, studying industrial engineering was just the beginning.

The EDB Scholarship broadened my horizons while strengthening my commitment to creating good jobs for Singaporeans. Studying abroad, learning new languages, and working with leading global businesses during my internship challenged me to grow, adapt, and navigate change with confidence. Above all, I'm inspired by the mentors and friends I've met around the world and at home at EDB.

EDB was very supportive of my personal and professional development and encouraged my language learning endeavours. Before starting university, I studied Japanese full-time under EDB’s foreign language development programme. I also attended winter school at Waseda University in Tokyo, where I continued my language studies. Beyond language abilities, EDB encouraged me to immerse myself in the local landscape to better understand the culture and environment.
EDB places a strong focus on the growth of our officers and the opportunities are limitless. Many of us have had the chance to rotate across different divisions to experience various types of work such as account management, policy and strategy, while also building new functional competencies.

EDB Scholar (2018)
LSE, B(Economics) & Yale, M (International & Development Economics)
I chose the EDB Scholarship because of EDB's unique role bridging government and business, which gave me the chance to engage companies and senior leaders across multiple industries. I was also attracted to the opportunity for global exposure through overseas postings and the chance to gain insights from both public and private sectors.
I studied in both the UK and the US under the EDB Scholarship. After graduation, I joined the EDB Associate Programme which gave me a good foundation and exposure to EDB’s work, before I took up my current role in the semiconductors division, where I work with industry leaders and government agencies to cultivate a thriving semiconductor ecosystem in Singapore. Every day, I see how our work translates into real economic growth for Singapore.
At the same time, I am also given opportunities to grow professionally within a collaborative and supportive team. Whether it's developing new industry partnerships or shaping policy directions, there's always room to stretch your capabilities!

I had taken on the EDB Scholarship on the promise of a meaningful career and the international exposure but have been enriched by far more than that. Studying in both the States and UK broadened my horizons and allowed me to better understand different cultures and perspectives. From my early internship at the Frankfurt office — which opened my eyes to EDB's global reach — to the invaluable guidance of nurturing mentors and a secondment opportunity that broadened my public sector exposure, every experience has been transformative.
EDB is unique in its deep commitment towards developing its scholars, and I have benefited massively from it. In addition to rotations within EDB where I covered the Semiconductors sector as well as Environmental Sustainability strategy under the Green Economy Group, I also have the opportunity to be seconded to the Energy Market Authority (EMA), to further develop Singapore’s Carbon Capture and Storage capabilities, which builds on my previous Green Economy portfolio in EDB.
