On 19 August 2019, Shell announced the launch of its Electric Vehicle (EV) charging service at its Sengkang station in Singapore, marking the first time it is introducing the offering in Southeast Asia. The new service, Shell Recharge, will be available at another nine other Shell stations across the island by October 2019. Shell Recharge charges 55 cents per kWh, and is compatible with most EVs in Singapore.
This is part of Shell’s strategy to "meet Singaporeans' evolving demand for convenience and mobility solutions". A Shell-commissioned study on electric vehicle consumer behaviour showed that 52 per cent of Singaporeans are deterred to buy or use an electric car as they think there are not enough charging stations in Singapore, the company said. “To meet the country’s climate action goals, Singapore needs more and cleaner energy solutions to power lives, businesses and transport sustainably,” said Ms Aw Kah Peng, Chairman of Shell Companies in Singapore.
Mr Chng Kai Fong, Managing Director of the Economic Development Board, said that the EV charging network is in line with the Government’s objectives to promote electric mobility and tackle climate change. He also hopes that the initiative will encourage more people to adopt EVs.
