The Nature Conservancy expands carbon project development capabilities in Singapore

Supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB)’s Carbon Project Development Grant, TNC will lead early-stage carbon project development in line with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement

The Nature Conservancy (TNC), a global environmental nonprofit, today announced an expansion of its Singapore team to generate high-quality, nature-based carbon credits. Leveraging Singapore’s position as a leading carbon services and trading hub in the region, TNC will establish a dedicated carbon project development team, creating new roles in areas vital to the success of nature-based carbon projects such as community engagement, applied science, monitoring, evaluation, and learning, as well as financial modeling and planning.

TNC will evaluate potential nature-based carbon projects that are aligned with Singapore’s International Carbon Credit (ICC) Framework and located in countries where Singapore has signed Implementation Agreements or Memorandums of Understanding on carbon credits collaboration under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The team will originate and conduct feasibility studies for the proposed carbon projects, which entails key activities such as overall project design, carbon accounting, local stakeholder engagement, financial modelling and risk analysis. Where possible, on-the-ground capabilities will be developed to build long-term capacity for high quality projects in these markets.

The expansion is supported by EDB’s Carbon Project Development Grant, which aims to support early-stage carbon project development and financing activities for Article 6 carbon credit projects.

“TNC’s presence in Singapore is built on a legacy of collaboration, with Singapore's First Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, serving as the Founding Co-Chair of our Asia-Pacific Council and the EDB as a key partner in establishing our local office. This grant builds on that foundation, enabling us to apply our decades of science-based expertise to develop high-quality, nature-based carbon projects that are key to addressing the climate crisis – offering scalable ways to reduce emissions, protect biodiversity, and support local communities.”

As a leading nature conservation non-profit, TNC brings valuable expertise in nature-based solutions to our ecosystem. We look forward to working with TNC and other partners to develop high-quality Article 6 carbon projects that support Singapore’s and the region’s climate goals.”

“Singapore has established itself as a leading hub for driving large-scale, science-backed environmental solutions that bridge regional development with global sustainability goals. TNC is recognized for its extensive global experience and science-based approach to developing and implementing high-quality carbon projects. It has played a key role in several industry firsts, including the world’s first Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) Gold-certified reforestation project in China and the first blue carbon site registered in South Australia. TNC has also contributed to the development of several global and national carbon accounting methodologies.

Today, TNC is advancing more than 60 carbon projects globally across 18 countries, including over 15 Nature-based solutions (NbS) projects in the Asia-Pacific region. In Singapore, TNC is a founding member of the Southeast Asia Climate and Nature-based Solution (SCeNe) Coalition, working with other environmental organizations to scale high-quality, triple-benefit NbS across the region.
