Flagship Asian HANNOVER MESSE event will provide a boost to Singapore's advanced manufacturing push.

The inaugural Asian leg of the world's leading trade show for industrial technology will be hosted in Singapore from October 16-18 at the Singapore EXPO Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Titled Industrial Transformation Asia-Pacific (ITAP) – A HANNOVER MESSE Event, the trade show will be held in Singapore for 3 years, starting from 2018.

The Singapore Tourism Board, together with SingEx Exhibitions and Deutsche Messe AG

The Singapore Tourism Board, together with SingEx Exhibitions and Deutsche Messe AG have signed an agreement to organise ITAP- a HANNOVER MESSE Event for three years starting 2018.

214 exhibiting companies from 13 countries will showcase the newest ideas in advanced manufacturing, from virtual power plants that redirect electricity to and from grids to simulating entire production chains digitally.

Through catalysing new partnerships between companies, showcasing the newest ideas in manufacturing and bringing new business deals both in Singapore and across the region, the event will provide a strong boost to Singapore's nation-wide push into advanced manufacturing.

HANNOVER MESSE: Key Industry 4.0 event since 1947

HANNOVER MESSE started in 1947 post-war Germany, as part of efforts to help the country recover from the war. Few expected the fair, which was initially called the Hannover Export Fair, to do as well as it did. Over 21 days, the event attracted some 736,000 visitors from 53 countries with some 1,934 export contracts worth a total of €31.6 million (US$36.5 million) inked.

Over the past 70 years, HANNOVER MESSE has grown to become the world's leading industrial tradeshow and largest capital goods exhibition. The 2017 edition of the event attracted 225,000 attendees from more than 70 countries, with over 75,000 attendees coming from abroad. These included titans across the whole spectrum of industries, from energy and chemicals to automation and Information technology.

The birth of ITAP, HANNOVER's Asian leg

Asia Pacific has been at the forefront of the digitalisation journey over the past few years. The region has surged ahead of the global average in the digitalisation push, a survey conducted by PWC in 2016 of some 2,000 companies showed. Asia Pacific companies were also the most optimistic of the potential gains from the advent of advanced manufacturing, with 68 per cent expecting efficiency gains of more than 20 per cent over the next five years.

Singapore was the natural choice for ITAP, the Asian leg of HANNOVER MESSE.

Singapore's commitment to advanced manufacturing as a key driver of future economic growth has manifested itself in government policies, investments in smart infrastructure and workforce skills upgrading, noted ITAP.

"With Global investments in state-of-the-art facilities using cutting-edge future technologies, the city is the de facto Asia Pacific Hub for Industry 4.0," added ITAP.

Singapore as the region's premier Industry 4.0 platform to catalyse industry transformation

As part of Singapore's Committee on the Future Economy report, advanced manufacturing was identified as a key driver of Singapore's future economic growth.

A Boston Consulting Group study predicted that advanced manufacturing could add S$36 billion (US$26 billion) in total manufacturing output, boost labour productivity by 30 per cent, and create 22,000 new jobs in Singapore by 2024.

The Singapore Government has launched a number of initiatives to address this opportunity. For instance, Singapore has dedicated S$3.2 billion (US$2.3 billion) under the Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2020 plan to support research in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering, and has also launched the SkillsFuture Series for Advanced Manufacturing to provide industry-relevant training for the workforce.

ITAP will complement these national initiatives. It provides a regional platform for leading manufacturers and technology suppliers to showcase and discover cutting-edge technologies, identify potential partners for co-innovation, and convenes industry leaders to share success stories and best practices in Asia for global adoption.

Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations Mr S Iswaran said: "The Committee on the Future Economy (CFE) had emphasised Singapore's commitment to develop a globally-competitive manufacturing hub. In that regard, Deutsche Messe's partnership with SingEx Group to stage the Asian edition of the HANNOVER MESSE in Singapore is a welcome development. It will help to showcase emerging technologies and catalyse the adoption of advanced manufacturing in Singapore, by bringing together global thought leaders and key industry stakeholders. The event will also be a significant boost to our business events pipeline."
