ASEAN maintains strong pull for U.S. companies

As a single economy, ASEAN is currently the sixth largest globally and third largest in Asia. It is also one of the world’s fastest-growing consumer markets, as well as a major manufacturing, distribution and services hub for Asia-Pacific.

With 2017 marking ASEAN’s 50th anniversary and the U.S.-ASEAN Dialogue Partnership’s 40th anniversary, the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce collaborated to launch the 2018 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Business Outlook Survey.

The survey attracted 317 senior executives from U.S companies across the 10 member countries – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam – of ASEAN. Many of the survey questions were asked for several years running and some portions of the survey are updated every year to reflect current developments and topical issues. More than half of the respondents have been operating in ASEAN for two decades or more, with the majority being responsible for more than one country.

This year’s survey has been expanded to offer a more in-depth look at U.S. business operations in the region, exploring the opportunities and challenges that come as the region continues its rapid growth.
